Jorit Wintjes

Jorit Wintjes (* 1974 in Fulda ) is a German ancient historian .

Live and act

From 1993 to 2000 he studied Greek, Latin and history in Würzburg , where he received his master's degree in modern history in 1998 with the master's thesis Alexis' de Tocqueville's' Souvenirs' as a source of his aristocratic self- image. In 2000 he passed the state examination in Greek and Latin and in 2003 he received his doctorate with the dissertation The Life of Libanius . From 2001 to 2004 he was a lecturer and from 2005 to 2008 research assistant at the Chair of Ancient History at the Julius Maximilians University of Würzburg . Since 2008 he has been an academic councilor there . In 2011/2012 he represented the Chair for Ancient History at the Julius Maximilians University of Würzburg. Since his habilitation in 2013 with the habilitation thesis ἔξω τῆς ἐγνωσμένης - On the history of the Roman naval war in northwestern Europe , Wintjes has been a private lecturer . In 2020 he was appointed Associate Professor at the Chair of Ancient History.

His main research interests are the Greek rhetoric of the imperial era and late antiquity, ancient military history (especially naval history) and reception history.
