José Antonio Ardanza
José Antonio Ardanza Garro (born June 10, 1941 in Elorrio , Province of Bizkaia in the Spanish Basque Country ) is a Basque politician. Ardanza was Prime Minister of the Basque Country Autonomous Region ( Lehendakari ) from 1985 to 1999 . He belongs to the moderate wing of the Basque nationalist party PNV .
Ardanza began his political career in 1979 as the mayor of Mondragón , and in 1983 he became President of the Provincial Parliament of Gipuzkoa . In 1985 he succeeded the then Basque Prime Minister Carlos Garaikoetxea after he was dismissed due to internal party disputes. During his tenure as Lehendakari, Ardanza expanded Basque autonomy, formed a coalition with the PSE- PSOE several times and, with the agreement of Ajuria Enea in 1988, was able to achieve a pact of all Basque parties except Herri Batasuna against ETA terrorism. 1999 was Juan Jose Ibarretxe to Ardanzas successor.
Since ending his political career in 1999 , he has been president of the telecommunications company Euskaltel .
