Lehendakari [ lɛ'ɛndakaˌɾi ] (also Lendakari in Spanish ) is the official name of the Prime Minister of the Basque Country Autonomous Region in Spain . The full formal official title is Eusko Jaurlaritzako Lehendakari ("Prime Minister of the Basque Government").

The word lehendakari is a combination of the Basque words lehen ("the first") and idazkari ("secretary"). The official seat of the Lehendakari is called Lehendakaritza [ lɛˈɛndakaˌɾitsa ]. The official residence of the Basque Prime Minister, Villa Ajuria Enea , is in the capital of the Basque Country region, in Vitoria-Gasteiz .

Prime Minister of the Basque Country

The first Basque government was established as Gobierno de Euzkadi in 1936 during the Second Spanish Republic . But soon after, during the Spanish Civil War , the Basque Country lost its autonomy and the Basque government existed only in political exile during the Franco dictatorship .

After Franco's death in the transition to democracy, a transitional body was first created in 1978 , the Consejo General Vasco ("General Basque Council"), whose presidents are not officially recognized as Lehendakari . Only since 1980, with the adoption of the Statute of Autonomy, has today's Basque government been in existence as the successor to the former Gobierno de Euzkadi .
