José Bénazéraf

José Bénazéraf (born January 8, 1922 in Casablanca , Morocco, † December 1, 2012 in Chiclana de la Frontera , Spain ) was a French film director, producer and screenwriter.

Life

Bénazéraf came from a wealthy background. After studying political science, he produced his first film Les lavandières du Portugal by Pierre Gaspard-Huit in 1958 . In 1961 he produced his first erotic film L'Éternité pour nous . With minimal financial means, he shot his first feature film, Hot Beach , in 1962 , an author's film with erotic beach scenes, which was a surprising success.

In 1966, the Swiss producer Erwin C. Dietrich engaged him to direct his film St. Pauli between night and morning . This collaboration with a representative of the commercial film remained an episode. Dietrich later described Bénazéraf as an unpleasant guy who mainly made demands.

Bénazéraf was considered disreputable, not least because of the banned film Joe Caligula about a gangster who desires his sister and declares war on the world. His most famous work, Frustration , was shot in 1971. The focus is on the story of a woman who finds her love experiences only in the imagination.

Jean-Luc Godard called Bénazéraf the only French cineast “who revolted against the tutelage of our people.” He had to give up his project of making a film about Leon Trotsky due to a lack of funding. When in the course of the sex wave the porn movies found mass distribution, Bénazéraf that about 15 years was long a pioneer was the modern erotic film with his other works put no special emphasis more.
