José Benito Barros

José Benito Barros Palomino (born March 21, 1915 in El Banco , Magdalena , † May 12, 2007 in Santa Marta ) was a Colombian composer.

Barros grew up with an aunt after the early death of his parents. His musical talent as a singer was already noticed in his childhood and he learned to play the guitar himself. He went to sea and tried his hand at prospecting gold before winning a Voz de Antioquia competition with the song El Minero .

In the 1950s he lived in Bogotá, where he met the musician Jesús Lara Pérez "Tumbelé" and u. a. composed his famous El gallo tuerto . His reputation spread to Panama, Mexico and Argentina, and Barros began composing rancheras and tangos for the musicians he had met in those countries .

In the early 1960s he retired to El Banco for health reasons. In 1975 he founded the Festival de la Cumbia here with friends , for which he composed the emblematic Cumbia La piragua . With more than 800 Paseos , cumbias, Porros , boleros , tangos, Currulaos , Puyas , Merengues and Garabatos Barros was next Pacho Galán , Luis Uribe and Lucho Bermúdez , with whom he occasionally worked, Colombian the most important composers of folk music.

In 1985 he received the Order Nacional al Mérito ; the Sociedad de Autores y Compositores de Colombia (SAYCO), of which he was one of the founding members, awarded him its highest award in 1995, the El Pentagrama SAYCO de oro .
