José Bohr

José Bohr (born Yopes Bohr Elzer on September 3, 1901 in Bonn ; † May 29, 1994 in Oslo ) was a singer , composer , actor and director .

Bohr came to Constantinople with his family in the first year of his life, where his father, who was a veterinarian, got a job in the private palace zoo of Sultan Abdülhamid II . In 1904 the family moved to Punta Arenas , where Bohr lived until 1921, worked as a silent film pianist and wrote his first compositions, including the hymn Punta Arenes . In 1921 he came to Buenos Aires. There he appeared as a singer on Radio Cultura , was involved in founding the station Radio Brusa and made his debut in 1924 at the Teatro Porteño as a singer in the revue De Puente Alsina a Montmartre by Ivo Pelay , Bayón Herrera and Manuel Romero . During this time in Buenos Aires he composed over two hundred titles, including Y tenía un lunar , Cascabelito and Pero hay una melena .

In 1925 he made his US debut at the Paramount Theater in New York in the play Gaucho , a short time later he had a leading role in Sombras de gloria , the first Spanish-language Hollywood film. Bohr lived in Mexico from 1932. There he was friends with artists such as Luis Buñuel , Cantinflas and Jorge Negrete and, as one of the pioneers of Mexican cinema, made more than thirty feature films, including a film about the life of Franz Liszt , for which Claudio Arrau recorded the score.

In 1940 he returned to Chile and became General Director of Chile Films . With this he produced sixteen other feature films, for which he composed all the film music. In addition, he continued to appear as a singer on radio and television. His hometown of Punta Arenas made him an honorary citizen in 1976, and the Chilean government awarded him the Order of Al Merit Bernardo O'Higgins . In 1980, on the 50th anniversary of the film's premiere, James M. Roberts , Executive Director of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences , awarded it a Lifetime Achievement Oscar . Bohr lived in Denmark from 1980 with his sons Daniel and Eduardo Bohr .
