José Manuel García-Margallo

José Manuel García-Margallo y Marfil (born August 13, 1944 in Madrid ) is a Spanish politician of the Partido Popular .

life and career

García-Margallo studied law and economics at the University of Bilbao and obtained both degrees in 1965. In 1973 he received a Master of Laws from Harvard University .

From 1977 to 1982 he was a member of the Congreso de los Diputados (Spanish House of Representatives) for the civil Unión de Centro Democrático (UCD), in the legislative period 1979-82 he was chairman of the Petitions Committee. In the parliamentary elections in 1982, the UCD suffered a heavy defeat and García-Margallo lost his mandate. He then joined the Christian Democratic Partido Demócrata Popular (PDP). As a candidate for the center-right alliance Coalición Popular (from which three years later the conservative Partido Popular emerged) he was able to return to parliament in 1986. From 1986 to 1994 he was the spokesman for economics and finance. From 1994 to December 2011 he was a member of the European Parliament , where he belonged to the Group of the European People's Party (EPP).

On December 21, 2011, he was appointed Foreign Minister in the Rajoy cabinet. In this role he called for Spain to participate in the administration of the British overseas territory of Gibraltar . He was no longer a member of the second Rajoy cabinet formed in November 2016 .
