José María Pemán

José María Pemán y Pemartín (born May 8, 1898 in Cádiz , † July 19, 1981 ibid) was a Spanish writer and lawyer. He belonged to the fascist movement Falange Española .

In 1927 he wrote a text for the Spanish national anthem on behalf of Miguel Primo de Rivera , which was also used under Franco in a modified form. In newspaper articles he opposed the Second Spanish Republic . After the Spanish Civil War , in Franquism , he was chairman of the Real Academia Española from 1938 to 1946 . He wrote prose, poetry and verse dramas in which he felt obliged to national and religious traditions, edited ancient dramas and wrote screenplays and essays.
