José Miguel Blanco

José Miguel Blanco Gavilán (born December 16, 1839 in Santiago de Chile , † February 4, 1897 ibid) was a Chilean sculptor.

In his youth, Blanco attended courses with Juan Bianchi at the Instituto Nacional de Santiago . From 1858 he studied with the French sculptor Auguste François at the Escuela de Bellas Artes . During this time he received prizes from the Salón Oficial in Santiago for his work . In 1867 he went to Paris, where he first studied with the medalist and sculptor Jean-Baptiste Farochon , from 1869 with Augustin-Alexandre Dumont at the École des Beaux-Arts .

In 1875 Blanco returned to Chile and worked as a sculptor, author of art books and art photographer. In 1879 he presented his project of an art museum for Santiago, which was realized in 1880 with the support of the general and patron Marcos Segundo Maturana and the minister of culture Manuel García de la Huerta Pérez . In 1895 he founded the art magazine El San Lunes and the literary magazine El Taller Ilustrado . For both he worked as an editor and cartoonist.

Blanco has received awards in Chile and France for his work. In 1942 they were part of the Chilean Contemporary Art exhibition at the Toledo Museum of Art in the USA. Several of his sculptures are in the possession of the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes . In the military school of Santiago there are the monuments of General Maturana and General Diego Dublé Almeida , in Copiapó the Monumento a las Glorias de Atacama and in Valparaíso the Monumento a Blanco Encalada . In addition to Nicanor Plaza , Blanco is considered to be the founder of an independent Chilean sculpture.
