José Moreira , full name José Hermes Moreira , (born September 30, 1958 in San José de Mayo ) is a former Uruguayan football player .

Career

society

Defensive player "Chico" Moreira played from 1976 to 1978 for Danubio FC in the Primera División . He started with the Montevideans, for whom he was active for a total of six years, initially in the team of the Quinta División. In 1976, Danubio Raúl Bentancur was his coach, who at the time still put him on the right wing position and thus offensive. He was then under contract from 1979 to 1984 at Nacional Montevideo . In the 1980 and 1983 seasons, his club Nacional Montevideo won the Uruguayan championship. In 1980 they won the Copa Libertadores . Moreira played in both finals against SC Internacional from the start. With a 1-0 victory over Nottingham Forest on February 11, 1981 , in which he was on the starting grid, he won the 1980 World Cup with this club . He also came in all three games for the Copa Interamericana 1981 as a starting eleven to train. However, Nacional lost to the Mexican club UNAM Pumas . He then continued his career in the USA from the 1984/85 season . The starting point at the time was the participation of Nacional Montevideo in a four-way tournament in Chicago , in which, in addition to the Montevideo club, Cosmos, Chicago Steam and the SSC Naples also took part. Moreira was voted the best player of the tournament there. After he received approval from Nacional in 1985, he initially traveled to the neighboring country with the intention of joining an Argentine team. There he was contacted, however, because the Chicago Steam trainer Willie Roy wanted to sign him. He then changed his plans, went to Chicago about two weeks after making contact and signed a 6-year contract in the USA six months later, which was valid for both "normal" football on the field and indoor football. His other employers in the USA were the Chicago Sting Indoor (164 games / 36 goals) from 1985 to 1988 , the Wichita Wings (119/35) from 1988 to 1991 and Cleveland Crunch ( 1991/92) 32/6). At the Cleveland Crunch he was seriously injured for the first time in his active career and after the first year with the ruptured Achilles tendon he was out for a period of almost a year and a half. Then he was in the 1993/94 season in the ranks of the Canton Invaders and in 1994 and 1995 in the squad of the Houston Hotshots (55/10). In 1995 Moreira, father of two daughters and a son, ended his career at the request of his wife Cristina.

National team

Moreira was a member of the Uruguayan U-20 national team , which participated in the U-20 South American Championship in Venezuela in 1977 and won the title. He played seven (no goal) tournament games for the team coached by Raúl Bentancor . He was also part of the squad at the 1977 Junior World Cup , in which Uruguay finished fourth. During the World Cup he was used four times (no goal). He was also a member of the senior national team of Uruguay , for which he completed 24 internationals between June 9, 1976 and September 13, 1981. He did not manage to score an international goal. With the Celeste he took part under coach Roque Máspoli in the Copa America 1979 and won the Copa Juan Pinto Durán with Uruguay in the same year . He was also a member of the squad for Mundialito , which took place over the turn of the year 1980/81, and won this trophy with the team. He also got a chance to qualify for the 1982 World Cup .
