José Rubio Urrea (also Pepe Rubio ; born September 10, 1931 in Lubrín , † March 15, 2012 in Madrid ) was a Spanish actor .

Life

Rubio, the son of a miner, came to Barcelona with his parents in 1939, where he worked in a textile and chemical factory as a teenager until his military service. Rubio made his stage debut in El divinmo impaciente by José María Permán in 1952 ; after he met Francisco Rabal , who became his fatherly friend, he came to the ensemble of the "Compañía Lope de Vega", where he was cast under José Tamayo in Sophocles ' King Oedipus . Rubio later celebrated successes at the Spanish capital's Teatro Español in plays such as Six People Looking for an Author , Death of a Salesman and Don Juan Tenorio . Among his other roles, those in The Diary of Anne Frank , Orpheus in the Underworld and The Judge of Zalamea stood out. In 1969 he played for the first time in the fifteen year long and around 12,000 times successful piece Enseñar a un sinvergüenza .

Rubio made the leap into the cinema - after two small roles - in 1959 with La casa de la Troya ; well-known films with his participation are Siempre es domingo (1961), El señor de la salle and Escala en Hi-Fi (both 1963), Los guardiamarinas (1966), the film adaptation of Enseñar a un sinvergüenza (1969), La casa de los Martínez (1971) and Blanca por fuera, rosa por dentro (1972). From the mid-1970s he was only seen in a few TV series with guest appearances.

His last professional appearance took place in 2006. In 2008 he received the “Premio Ercilla” for his life's work.
