Josef Bandion

Josef Bandion (born November 2, 1930 in St. Pölten , † September 20, 2005 in Vienna ) was an Austrian lawyer. In 1975 he was elected director of the municipal administration , the highest-ranking civil servant of the city of Vienna. No other magistrate has served as long as he.

Life

Bandion studied law and received his doctorate in 1954. From 1961 he supported the Federal President in the Austrian Presidential Chancellery , until 1965 Adolf Schärf , then Franz Jonas .

He was brought in 1973 by the newly elected Mayor Leopold Gratz ( SPÖ ) from the presidential office to the Vienna City Hall . From 1973 to 1975 he acted as head of the presidential office (head of the presidential office of the municipal administration) and from 1975 to July 31, 1995, elected unanimously by the city senate, succeeding Rudolf Ertl as municipal director of the city of Vienna and also the regional office director of the state of Vienna.

He officiated, reporting directly to the mayor, until 1984 under Leopold Gratz , 1984–1994 under Helmut Zilk and in the final phase of his professional life under Michael Häupl . The very self-confident Bandion had various differences of opinion with Zilk in particular, which also got into the media.

After leaving office, Josef Bandion was elected honorary citizen of the City of Vienna by the Vienna City Council and State Parliament in October 1995 . In the same year he was awarded the Great Gold Medal of Honor with the Star for Services to the Republic of Austria by Federal President Thomas Klestil .

In addition to his professional activity, Bandion has been managing director of the Ludwig Boltzmann Society for the promotion of scientific research in Austria for almost 40 years since 1963 .

Bandion was buried in the Hietzinger Friedhof , group 60, in grave no.
