Josef Christ (* 1956 in Langenargen ) is a German lawyer and a judge of the Federal Constitutional Court since December 1, 2017 , previously he was Vice-President of the Federal Administrative Court .

Career

Josef Christ initially did not pursue a legal career, but obtained a degree in administrative management from the Kehl University of Applied Sciences , and only then did he study law at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg . He received his doctorate there in 1989. jur. In 1990 he passed the second state examination in law and then entered the judiciary. He initially worked at the Karlsruhe Administrative Court. From there he was seconded to the Federal Chancellery from July 1993 to February 1995 , from April 1996 to the end of 1999 to the Federal Constitutional Court as a research assistant and from January to September 2000 to the Administrative Court of Baden-Württemberg . In August 2001 he was promoted to judge at the Baden-Württemberg Administrative Court. From October 2001 to April 2002, Josef Christ was again delegated by the Administrative Court to the Federal Constitutional Court and from May 2007 to the State Ministry of Baden-Württemberg . There he worked as an advisor to Prime Minister Günther Oettinger in the Federalism Commission , which brought him close ties in politics.

On August 1, 2008, he was appointed judge at the Federal Administrative Court. There he belonged to the 9th Revision Senate of the court , which was concerned with road and right of way , legal issues relating to the laying of railways, municipal tax law and land consolidation law. On July 1, 2014, Christ was appointed Vice President of the Federal Administrative Court. His contacts in politics are said to have helped him in the surprisingly quick promotion. He became chairman of the 8th revision senate, which is responsible, among other things, for the law governing property issues and economic administration law.

On September 5, 2017, Christ was elected by the German Bundestag as a judge at the Federal Constitutional Court. He is the first judge of the Federal Constitutional Court who, following a reform of the electoral procedure in 2015, was directly elected by the plenary of the Bundestag at the suggestion of the Judges' Election Committee. He succeeded Judge Wilhelm Schluckebier on December 1, 2017 , who retired for reasons of age.
