Andreas Paulus

Andreas Leonhard Paulus (born August 30, 1968 in Frankfurt am Main ) is a German legal scholar and holder of the chair for public law , especially international law , at the Georg-August University in Göttingen . Since March 2010 he has been a judge of the First Senate of the Federal Constitutional Court .

Life

Andreas Paulus grew up in Eppstein - Vockenhausen , where the family moved in the mid-1970s. In Eppstein he went to elementary school and the grammar school of the Bischof-Neumann-Schule in Königstein im Taunus .

Paul is single and childless.

academic career

Andreas Paulus studied law at the Universities of Göttingen , Geneva , Munich and Harvard . In 1994 he passed his first state examination and in 1996 his second state examination.

In 2000 he submitted his dissertation on The International Community in International Law at the University of Munich. In September 2003 he received the Bavarian Habilitation Award . In the academic year 2003/04 he taught as Visiting Assistant Professor at the University of Michigan Law School, in July 2005 at the Duke-Geneva Institute in Transnational Law. From July 2006 he was a private lecturer in public law, international and European law , constitutional history and legal philosophy at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich at the chair of Bruno Simma and Georg Nolte .

He was also an intern at the UN Office of the Legal Counsel ( Office of the Legal Advisor in the Office of Legal Affairs ) and the Chief Prosecutor of the International Tribunals for the former Yugoslavia and Rwanda .

On February 25, 2010 it became known that Paulus had been proposed by the FDP as the new judge of the Federal Constitutional Court . The election committee of the Bundestag elected him on March 5, 2010 to this office, which he assumed on March 16, 2010 after the departure of Hans-Jürgen Papiers . He is a member of the first senate of the court.

He is a liaison professor at the German National Academic Foundation .

Legal practice

Paulus was counsel of the Federal Republic of Germany in the LaGrand case (Germany / USA ) and adviser to the German team in the Certain Property case ( Liechtenstein / Germany) before the International Court of Justice in The Hague .

Activity as a judge at the Federal Constitutional Court

Paulus was involved in the ZDF judgment of 2014. There he was the only one who took the view that the corrections that the court demanded from ZDF were not sufficient. His opinion was added to the judgment.

Political activities

Andreas Paulus is a member of the FDP in Göttingen . He currently does not hold any political office. Before that he was a member of the FDP Bavaria , for which he held various functions. Among other things, he was a member of a Munich district committee # Bavaria , deputy chairman of the Munich FDP and chairman of the Bavarian constitutional committee .
