Josef Erler

Josef Erler (born February 9, 1802 in Brixen , † March 31, 1844 in Innsbruck ) was an Austrian landscape painter .

Life

Erler received his first lessons in drawing from Josef Tauber in Brixen, before he came to the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna in 1825 , where he stayed for 11 years. During this time he received the Gundel Prize in antique drawing in 1827 and the Lampi Prize in drawing from nature in 1833. In 1836 he returned to Brixen. He died at the age of 42.

Josef Erler painted history pictures, portraits and especially landscape pictures. His pictures are largely forgotten today and are of interest not so much because of his painterly achievements, but rather because of the historical views of South Tyrol that he captured .
