Josef Floren

Josef Floren (born March 29, 1941 ; † November 11, 2012 ) was a German classical archaeologist .

From 1961 to 1972, Josef Floren studied Classical Archeology, Latin and Ancient History at the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Münster and the Albert Ludwig University in Freiburg . The doctorate with Max Wegner in classical archeology took place in 1972 with a thesis on the subject of studies on the typology of the Gorgoneion . In 1972/73 he held the travel grant of the German Archaeological Institute in the Mediterraneanon road. Since returning in 1973 he has been a research assistant at the Institute for Classical Archeology and Early Christian Archeology / Archaeological Museum of the Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster.

Floren primarily researched ancient sculpture . Together with Werner Fuchs , he has been working on the revision of the part The Greek Sculpture of the three-volume Handbook of Archeology - The Greek Sculpture, and was responsible in particular for the first volume on geometric and archaic art published in 1987 . Volume 2 on classical sculpture was in progress, the third on Hellenistic sculpture in preparation.

Floren also emerged as a critic of the opaque exhibition practices of the Stendaler Winckelmann Museum and dubious art dealer.
