Josef Geiger (born February 23, 1852 in Weißen , † August 16, 1929 in Marktoberdorf ) was a German landowner, wholesaler and member of the German Reichstag .

Life

Geiger was a wholesaler and landowner in Marktoberdorf . From 1900 to 1907 he was a member of the Bavarian Chamber of Deputies and from June 1905 to 1907 he was a member of the German Reichstag for the Schwaben 5 constituency ( Kaufbeuren , Mindelheim , Oberdorf , Füssen ) and the German Center Party . Josef Geiger Founder of the company Josef Geiger KG called "Käs-Geiger" in Marktoberdorf in the Allgäu. The story of the “Käs-Geiger” began on a farm in the small hamlet “Weißen” near Rieder. The local farmer Johann Evangelist Geiger had a lucky hand with his cows, with which he could produce more milk and butter than he needed in his own household or for the nearby Oberdorf market. Josef Geiger was able to expand this dairy product business with great skill and soon moved to Marktoberdorf. There he built up the cheese wholesaler Käs-Geiger. For the export of dairy products, wooden boxes were required, which Josef Geiger soon produced himself in his own sawmill. Josef Geiger had five children: Mathilde Forster, Cilly Maurer, Lina Hindelang (see Fa Hindelang & Niederreuter), Josef Geiger jun (1883–1947) and Hans Geiger. The two sons Josef Geiger jun (District Administrator in Allgäu and 2nd Mayor in Marktoberdorf. For the Center Party and later for the Bavarian People's Party. Josef Geiger resigned as Mayor in 1933 after the Nazis came to power) ran the cheese business and the youngest son Hans Geiger took over the sawmill (Holz-Geiger) in Marktoberdorf. As part of the structural changes, the cheese business was sold in 1976 year. The sawmill was closed in 1986.
