Josef Imboden

Josef Imboden (born February 14, 1840 in St. Niklaus ; † August 14, 1925 there ) was a Valais politician , mountaineer and mountain guide . Josef Imboden was the first Swiss mountain guide in the Himalayas .

First Swiss mountain guide in the Himalayas

In 1883 Josef Imboden, as the first generation mountain guide, undertook a remarkable expedition into the Kangchenjunga group of the Himalayas. Here he led u. a. the first ascent of Khanla Kang ( 6058  m ). He was thus also the first Swiss mountain guide to have exceeded an altitude of 6,000 meters.

Women's alpinism pioneer: Pointe Burnaby and Imbodentind

With Elizabeth Hawkins-Whitshed (later Mrs. Burnaby, Mrs. Main and Mrs. Aubrey Le Blond) Imboden made the first ascent of the 4135  m high summit of the Bishorn in 1884, which was christened Pointe Burnaby in her honor.

In the years 1897–1899, the two of them carried out a total of 38 first ascents on three Norway expeditions , 29 of which were first ascents . So on August 15, 1899 they managed the first ascent of a 1565  m high mountain in the group of Lakselvtindere, which was christened Imbodentind in honor of Imbodens, and this first ascent was also tackled at sea level.

Politician

From 1901 to 1904 Josef Imboden also served as mayor of St. Niklaus. He was one of the wealthiest men in the Nikolaital .
