Josef Kohaut

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Wenzel Josef Thomas Kohaut (also Kohout , Kohault ; born May 4, 1738 in Saaz , † probably 1777 in Paris ) was a Bohemian composer and lutenist .

Life

Josef Kohout was the son of an organist from Saaz. As a field trumpeter in the Austrian army, he deserted to France, where he was accepted as a composer and lutenist in the chapel of Louis-François de Bourbon, prince de Conti . In this role he wrote a series of operas for the Comédie Italienne , as well as harpsichord sonatas. His six symphonies , which can be found in publishing catalogs, are considered lost. They appeared in the collective print “La Melodia Germanica” (Paris 1758) together with works by Johann Stamitz , Franz Xaver Richter and Georg Christoph Wagenseil .

The date of Kohaut's death is uncertain, it was dated to 1793 for a long time, but from 1770 there is no trace of him. In the Paris archive there is a document from 1777, which refers to the estate of a Joseph Cohaut.

In older literature, the Viennese composer and lutenist Karl Kohaut is often mentioned as a brother, and there is no close family relationship between the two musicians.
