Josef Linschinger

Josef Linschinger (* 1945 in Gmunden , Austria ) is an Austrian artist whose works can be assigned to constructive / concrete art and visual / conceptual poetry .

life and work

Josef Linschinger studied agriculture and craftsmanship at the University of Design in Linz . From 1976 to 1980 he was a student at the Free International University for Color and Environment Salzburg . From 1975 to 2003 he worked as a lecturer and professor at the Art University Linz . In 2013 Linschinger headed the XVIII. International Summer Academy Plauen .

Linschinger dealt with constructive art even before his studies. The contact with Heinrich Frieling at the Free International University for Color and Environment and the colleagues with Max Lüscher at the Art University Linz encouraged the discussion of the subject of color. From 1977 concrete reliefs made of wood and lacquer and from 1987 canvas paintings mainly in red and blue as well as in yellow and black were created. From 1987 he also worked in the field of visual / conceptual poetry. In 1993 he was able to realize his first large-scale sculpture and in 2008 the first text films were made.

In 1981 Josef Linschinger started exhibiting. From 1986 he took part in the group "vertical-diagonal-horizontal", which exhibited in several European countries with the involvement of local artists and which he supported until 2000. In 1989 Linschinger organized the exhibition series “Constructive currents”, which included nine exhibitions in six cities in Upper Austria and in Passau . It became the pilot project of the Gmundner Symposia for Concrete Art, which he founded in 1990 and which he held annually until 2009. Works by 600 international artists could be shown and published in this context. He emerged as a prize winner from art competitions. u. a. Austrian graphic competition 1988, 1993, 1996. Some of his designs were realized for public spaces. Linschinger is a member of the MAERZ artists' association . From 1985 to 2009 he was President of the Salzkammergut Artists' Guild founded in 1928 (now Kunstforum Salzkammergut). He lives and works in Linz and Traunkirchen .
