Josef Loreye

Josef Loreye (born June 21, 1767 in Mahlberg ; † October 30, 1844 ) was a German Roman Catholic priest and lyceum director in Rastatt .

Life

Josef Loreye attended the Piarist College in Rastatt and studied philosophy and theology at the Studium Theologicum and at the diocesan seminary in Strasbourg . Since he was still too young to be ordained a priest after completing his studies, he entered the school service in the Episcopal-Speyer's seminary in Bruchsal in 1789 and, after being ordained (October 18, 1790), switched to the grammar school in Baden on January 1, 1790 1808 was relocated to Rastatt , a former Jesuit school (today Ludwig-Wilhelm-Gymnasium). In 1800 he was canon at the collegiate monastery in Baden.

In 1818 he was appointed director of the lyceum with the title of clerical council and of the teachers' seminary that was connected with it for several years. Loreye modernized the curriculum and teaching methods in the spirit of enlightenment . Under his direction the school experienced a heyday and became known far beyond the borders of Rastatt. In 1834 Loreye was appointed a member of the commission to advise on the new curriculum for Baden's secondary schools. In 1839, on his 73rd birthday, he celebrated his golden jubilee in office. On this occasion, the state universities of Heidelberg and Freiburg awarded him theological (Freiburg) and philosophical (Heidelberg) honorary doctorates. Loreye had already received the Knight's Cross of the Order of the Zähringer Löwen on New Year's Day 1835 from Grand Duke Leopold of Baden .

In 1840 Loreye retired with the title of Privy Council and received honorary citizenship of the city of Rastatt on his 74th birthday (June 21, 1840) .

On the occasion of his jubilee in office in 1839, Loreyes students and friends established a scholarship foundation, the Loreyanum Scholarship. Josef-Loreye-Straße in Rastatt is named after him.
