Josef Mayer first attended the elementary school in Diersbach, then from 1880 the agricultural school in Ritzlhof . This was followed by stays in various farms. In 1893 he married Theresia Geisberger, a baker's daughter from Kalling . Her parents had previously acquired the inn in 1891 from the estate of the Dabon'schen possessions (formerly the castle tavern). On the wedding day, they took over the business with around 40  yokes . Between 1915 and 1937 Josef Mayer also traded cattle. The early death of his son Josef Mayer jun. 1937 was very close to him. He then resigned a large part of his public offices and concentrated on the local hospitality and agricultural operations.
