Josef Nowak (doctor)

Josef Nowak (Czech: Josef Novák ; born November 1, 1841 in Trautenau , Bohemia ; † March 26, 1886 in Prague , Bohemia) was an Austrian hygienist and author of the first modern specialist book on hygiene in Austria.

Life

After studying at the kk medical-surgical Josephs Academy in Vienna , he received his doctorate in medicine in 1866. He then got a job as a military surgeon in Prague . After his military service in the 21st Infantry Regiment, Nowak became an assistant to Franz Cölestin von Schneider at the Department of Chemistry at the Josephs Academie. During this time he became a member of the Military Medical Council and the Inspectorate of the Military Drug Administration. After the Josephs Academy was closed, Nowak switched to teaching hygiene at the University of Vienna in 1874 . The following year he was appointed the first professor of hygiene in Vienna. In 1881 he published the textbook on hygiene , which is considered the first modern specialist book in Austria in this field.

After his early death, Florian Kratschmer took over the chair for hygiene, then from 1887 Max von Gruber .
