from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Josef Viera (actually: Josef Sebastian Vierasegerer ; * July 22, 1890 in Munich ; † June 5, 1970 ibid) was a German author.

Life

Viera emigrated to German East Africa , where he lived for eight years. Before the First World War he worked as a merchant, factory manager, planter, farmer, caravan driver and hunter. He took part in the war from 1914 to 1918 as a soldier under Paul von Lettow-Vorbeck . After his return he studied philosophy and literature at the Munich University and from 1922 lived as a freelance writer in Munich with breaks.

Again and again he discussed the adventures of German emigrants in Africa and the struggles of the German protection forces. His first literary work Juma, the African rascal appeared in 1922 with a sales-promoting foreword by Paul von Lettow-Vorbeck. His first large volume of short stories, Bana Sikukuu, from 1924, later published as The African Ranger , included a foreword by the former governor Heinrich Schnee and illustrations by Franz Müller-Münster. Many more stories followed.

From 1925 to 1939 Viera published the series From Far World , in which 150 issues appeared. After the " seizure of power " by the National Socialists , he wrote books that conformed to the system, such as 1933 Utz fights for Hitler , SA man Schott and Horst Wessel . He was editor of the magazine The Colonies Call! and in 1939 published the book Karl Peters' Struggle for an East African Colonial Empire .

In the post-war period he mainly wrote books for young people, some of which were played in Africa again. He changed his author's name from Josef Viera to Josef S. Viera .
