Josef Schindler (church historian)

Josef Schindler (born June 23, 1835 in Lachowitz, Bohemia , † February 22, 1911 in Prague ) was an Austrian Roman Catholic theologian, church historian and university professor . His scientific focus was the church history of Bohemia .

Life

As a farmer's son , Schindler studied Catholic theology at the Universitas Carolo-Ferdinandea in Prague . He was ordained a priest in 1860 and Dr. theol. PhD . At the University of Prague, Schindler worked as an adjunct in the theological faculty from 1862 . During a trip through the member states of the German Confederation , he made the acquaintance of theologians Josef Hergenröther , Franz Hettinger and Karl Joseph von Hefele .

He took on substitute professorships at the Charles University in Prague in pastoral theology , fundamental theology and church history. In 1871 he became an associate professor for church history. After he was appointed full professor in 1874 , he added patrology to the curriculum in 1878 . In 1881/1882 he was the last rector before the national division of Prague universities . In 1894/95 he was also rector of the Karl Ferdinand University . As rector of the university, he was a member of the Bohemian state parliament .

In 1898 Schindler became provost of the Collegiate Foundation of All Saints on Prague's Hradschin .
