Franz Seraph Hettinger (born January 13, 1819 in Aschaffenburg , † January 26, 1890 in Würzburg ) was a German Roman Catholic priest and professor of patrology, dogmatics and homiletics.

Life

After attending high school in Aschaffenburg , he began studying philosophy and later theology . Until 1841 he attended the theological seminary in Würzburg . He then studied at the Collegium Germanicum in Rome, where he was ordained by Cardinal Patrizi on September 2, 1843, and in 1845 acquired the degree of doctor of theology. In Germany he was chaplain in Alzenau from 1845 , from 1847 he held an assistant position at the seminary in Würzburg , to whose sub-rain he was appointed in 1852. From 1857 he taught patrology and introductory science in Würzburg as a full professor , later also apologetics , homiletics and, from 1884, dogmatics . After Martin von Wagner died in 1858 , Hettinger was sent from the university to Rome to deal with Wagner's estate, which he had bequeathed to the university. With luck he could still manage the finances before the outbreak of the Sardinian War and the associated loss of value. For the return trip, however, he had to dress up as a French Abbé in order not to be recognized as a German.

As a professor, Hettinger was one of the founders of the K.St.V. Walhalla Würzburg in the KV , to which he remained lifelong. In 1873 Hettinger also became an honorary member of the KDSt.V. Marcomannia in the CV .

Together with Joseph Hergenröther , he was called to Rome in 1868 to help prepare the first Vatican Council as a consultator . In 1879 Pope Leo XIII appointed him . to the papal house prelate .

Hettinger was a leading scholar with broad interests. He was extremely popular as an academic teacher and speaker and widely read as an author. He has received numerous honors and was raised to the nobility by the Bavarian king.

Works

Hettinger emerged as an apologist and dogmatist through his "Apology of Christianity", published 1863–1867, which had six editions by the end of the 19th century, and through his "Textbook of Fundamental Theology" from 1879. With Georg Anton Stahl , Josef Hergenröther and Heinrich Denzinger , he was one of the representatives of the so-called Roman theology , who made Würzburg a center of this "Roman school". “From the world and the church; Pictures and Sketches ”from 1885 was Hettinger's most widespread work. The 5th edition appeared in 1902. He dedicated some works to Dante Alighieri and his divine comedy . "Basic idea and character of the divine comedy by Dante Alighieri" (Bonn, 1876); "The theology of the divine comedy of Dante Alighieri presented in its main features" (Cologne, 1879); “The divine comedy of Dante Alighieri is presented according to its essential content and character. A contribution to their appreciation and understanding ”(Freiburg, 1880); "De theologiæ speculativæ ac mysticæ connubio in Dantis præsertim trilogiâ" (Würzburg, 1882); "Dante and Beatrice" (Frankfurt, 1883); "Dante's Spiritual Walk" (Cologne, 1888).

In his “Apology of Christianity” (e.g. on the role of the people of Israel in history or on the Talmud ) , Hettinger represented decidedly anti-Judaist positions and prejudices.
