Josef Schnell (born February 2, 1934 , † September 26, 2010 ) was a German entrepreneur and former weightlifter and trainer.

Career

Josef Schnell from Schrobenhausen in Upper Bavaria learned to be a carpenter after finishing school. The tall, slender youngster, in whom one could expect more of a track and field athlete, decided on weightlifting as the sport he wanted to practice. In 1951 he was the second winner at the German youth championships and in 1952 German youth champions. He also quickly caught up with the top German ranks among the active players. As early as 1954 he won his first German championship title in middle heavyweight (up to 90 kg body weight). An excellent weightlifting team formed around him in Schrobenhausen, which won the German team championship in 1959. At the world and European championships that took place in Munich in 1955, Josef Schnell took 7th place in the middle heavyweight division, and even 4th in the European championship. In the following years, Josef Schnell was no longer able to meet the high expectations placed on him as a weight lifter. His performances were too fluctuating. As a personal best he achieved 420 kg (135-125-160) in the Olympic three-way fight in 1959.

During his weightlifting career, Josef Schnell began to set up his own company in Peutenhausen near Schrobenhausen. He developed and produced sports and training equipment and acquired a large number of patents for it. Josef Schnell had acquired the necessary knowledge in his own studies. The successful company, SCHNELL Trainingsgeräte GmbH, is now being continued by his wife and sons.

Josef Schnell also made a name for himself as a weightlifting trainer. In this area, too, he had acquired extraordinary knowledge through self-study . One of the beneficiaries was the young Rudolf Mang from Bellenberg, whom Schnell led to the top of the world. Werner Kucera from Landshut made Schnell a world record holder in pressing.

Until his death, Josef Schnell took an active part in his company and the sport. He died on September 26, 2010 at the age of 76.
