Josef Svoboda
Josef Svoboda (born May 10, 1920 in Čáslav , † April 8, 2002 in Prague ) was a Czech set designer .
Trained as a carpenter , Svoboda switched to the Prague Industrial and Art School . He was a co-founder of the theater in the Bedřich Smetana Museum . From 1948 he was a set designer and soon afterwards head of equipment at the Prague National Theater .
From 1956 he also worked in the GDR (Dresden) and soon afterwards throughout Europe and America. In London he decorated Richard Wagner's Ring at the Covent Garden Opera .
With the composer Václav Kašlík, among others, he developed an anti-illusionist style and incorporated special lighting effects and films into his designs.
His concept of the Diapolyekran , which was presented at Expo 67 in Montreal , attracted international attention .
Svoboda also worked with the magic lantern .
