Josef Wirth (entrepreneur)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Josef Wirth (* 1850 ; † 1913 ) was a German entrepreneur and patron.

Wirth was the owner of the Josef Wirth paper, cardboard and corrugated cardboard factory , a paper factory in the Kleinlappen district of the Freimann community . In the spring of 1945, the central file of the NSDAP with its 10 million card comprehensive directory of party members was supposed to be destroyed. However, Hans Huber, the managing director at the time, recognized the importance of the documents and delayed the destruction until the Americans arrived. Huber made the occupation authorities aware of the 68 tons of Nazi documents still stored in the factory. However, it took until October 1945 until the importance of the documents was recognized and the documents were saved, which finally found their way into the holdings of the Berlin Document Center . The card index has been in the Federal Archives in Berlin-Lichterfelde since 1994 . The circumstances of the failed destruction of the Nazi files appear in a story by Stefan Heym .

Josef Wirth showed himself to be a sponsor of public and cultural institutions in the community.

In memory of his work, the city of Munich named a path in the Freimann district after him in 1964 .
