The Joseph Sisters of Cluny (also: Cluny Sisters ) have been a missionary, teaching and caring Roman Catholic religious community based in Paris since 1807 .

history

The religious congregation founded by Anne-Marie Javouhey in Chalon-sur-Saône in 1807 took its seat in Cluny in 1812 and was called Sœurs (de) Saint-Joseph de Cluny (Order abbreviation: SJC), German: " Joseph Sisters of Cluny", also for short : "Cluny Sisters" (English: Cluny Sisters ) or "Sankt Josef von Cluny Sisters". It spread in France, then in the French colonies ( Réunion 1816, Senegal 1819, French Guiana , Guadeloupe , Martinique , Saint-Pierre and Miquelon and Puducherry , in India 1822-1827).

After the founder's death, her biological sister Rosalie Javouhey (1790–1868) succeeded her in 1851. In 1854 it achieved the recognition of the congregation by Pope Pius IX.

Claire Houareau SJC has been Superior General since 2012.

The congregation has around 2,600 sisters (as of 2017). The 30 religious provinces worldwide span all continents (strongest concentration in India, not represented in German-speaking countries):

  1. Europe: France-Switzerland, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Poland, Great Britain-Ireland
  2. Africa: Central Africa, West Africa, Angola / Guinea-Bissau , Guinea, Democratic Republic of the Congo , Senegal / Niger, Mozambique , Seychelles - Tanzania , Madagascar, Réunion
  3. America: USA and Canada, Saint-Pierre and Miquelon , West Indies, Antilles / Guyana , Haiti, Brazil, Paraguay / Argentina, Peru-Cuba
  4. Asia: North India Plains ( Calcutta ), North East India / Nepal ( Kalimpong ), South India ( Tiruchirappalli ), South Central India ( Salem ), South East India ( Puducherry ), South West India ( Bangalore )
  5. Australia and Pacific: Australia / Papua New Guinea, New Zealand / Philippines, French Pacific
