Josep Benet i Company

Josep Benet i Company (* 1956 in Berga ) is a Catalan countertenor who specializes in early music .

life and work

Josep Benet received his first musical training from his father. At the age of nine, Benet joined the Escolania de Montserrat choir and stayed there for five years. Here he became a soprano soloist in various performances and recordings. He later studied solfège , harmony , counterpoint, music theory, violin with Xavier Turull , piano with Àngel Soler and Sofia Puche, and singing with Jordi Albareda at the Conservatori de Barcelona . Here he earned the title of singing teacher in 1980. He completed in-depth studies in music at the Musikhochschule in Munich on the basis of a grant from the Humboldt Foundation .

Benet has earned an outstanding reputation in the field of early music , but also gives concerts with romantic or contemporary works. He was praised by music critics primarily for the performance of works by Johann Sebastian Bach . In addition, he was musically committed to the school of Nôtre Dame de Paris and polyphonic works of the Middle Ages such as the Codex Chantilly , works by Guillaume de Machaut and Johannes Ciconia . He has performed such works primarily at renowned festivals in Europe and the United States.

He has worked with early music ensembles such as Dulcis Harmonia , Ars Musicae , Hespèrion XX , Clemencic Consort , La Colombina , Concerto Italiano , La Chapelle Royale , Les Arts Florissants , Al Ayre Español and Diatessaron . He also worked with orchestras such as the Orquestra Ciutat de Barcelona , Orquestra del Teatre Lliure , the Orchestras of Valladolid, the Balearic Islands, Simfònica del Vallès , Sinfònica de Euskadi or Sinfònica de Granada .

From 1981 he taught singing at the Center for Early Music at the Conservatory in Geneva. In 2002 and 2003 he taught singing at the Badalona Conservatory.

Benet has recorded works for numerous labels and for various radio stations (Catalunya Música, France Musique, Radio Classique, Radio Nacional de España, Westdeutscher Rundfunk, Rai italiana, Suisse romande).
