Live and act

From 1942 he taught biblical studies at the local theological faculty and was professor of exegesis of the Old Testament there from 1949 to 1978. From 1954 to 1958 he was a member of the Justice Chapter of Lund and in 1957, 1958 and 1963 also a member of the Church Assembly (Kyrkomot) of the Swedish Church , where, among other things, he participated in the controversial dispute about the introduction of the ordination of women . He deconstructed the arguments of the fundamentalist opponents as not exegetically justified. Gerleman was a member of several scientific societies in Lund and for many years editor of the Annual of the Swedish Theological Institute .

In science, Gerleman was mainly concerned with the ketuvim . He has written commentaries on the Book of Ruth , the Song of Songs and the Book of Esther , as well as the critical apparatus for the Book of Job in the BHS .
