Josep Tapiró i Baró (born February 7, 1836 in Reus , Catalonia , † October 4, 1913 in Tangier , Morocco ) was a Catalan painter and watercolorist.

Life

Tapiró was trained in Reus by the painter Domènec Soberano and then went to Rome. He returned to Spain and then found his true calling after a trip to Tangier, which he made with his painter friend Marià Fortuny i Marsal . He turned to the Maghreb . He moved to Tangier and lived there until his death. In 1947 the painter's remains were transferred to his hometown and buried in the central cemetery in Reus.

The world of the Orient, which Tapiró encountered in Morocco, he portrayed with great precision in his watercolors and paintings. He is counted among the orientalists in painting.

Exhibitions

Two of his watercolors depicting characters from Tangier were on view in 2009 and 2010 in the Convidats d'Honor exhibition at the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya ('National Museum of Catalan Art') in Barcelona .

Honors

A street and the high school in his hometown today (2015) bear the name of Tapiró. A memorial plaque is now attached to the house where he was born.
