Josep de Boltas

Josep de Boltas OFM Disc (born October 11, 1738 in Oran , Algeria , † December 8, 1795 in Guissona , Catalonia ) was Bishop of Urgell and from March 31, 1785 to December 8, 1795 Co-Prince of Andorra .

Life

He was born in Oran to Catalan parents. In his youth he was accepted into the Franciscan order of the Alcantariner (Franciscan Discalceaten ). Josep de Boltas became lecturer of canon law and curator of his order.

Pope Pius VI appointed him on February 14, 1785 Bishop of Urgell. He was ordained bishop on April 17, 1785 by the Patriarch of the West Indies Antonio Sentmenat y Castellá ; Co- consecrators were Francisco Armañá Font OESA, Archbishop of Tarragona , and Francisco Mateo Aguiriano Gómez , Auxiliary Bishop in Toledo .

During his term of office he did valuable work in economic, health and social areas. During the French Revolution, he acted neutrally to avoid problems.
