Joseph Anthony Gray
Joseph Anthony Gray (born February 25, 1884 in Susquehanna , Cambria County , Pennsylvania , † May 8, 1966 in Spangler , Pennsylvania) was an American politician . Between 1935 and 1939 he represented the state of Pennsylvania in the US House of Representatives .
Career
Joseph Gray attended public schools in his home country and then St. Benedict's School in Carrolltown . In 1905 he graduated from Eastman College in Poughkeepsie ( New York ). Between 1900 and 1903 he served in various units in the US Army . After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1910, he began to work in this profession in Ebensburg . At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . He was a member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives in 1913 and 1914 . From 1916 to 1920 he was President of the Health Committee. From 1920 he ran a cinema in Spangler. From 1930 to 1934 he was also the school director there.
In the 1934 congressional election , Gray was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the 27th constituency of Pennsylvania , where he succeeded Republican Nathan Leroy Strong on January 3, 1935 . After a re-election, he was able to complete two terms in Congress until January 3, 1939 . During this time, other New Deal laws were passed by the Roosevelt government. In 1935 the provisions of the 20th Amendment to the Constitution were applied for the first time , according to which the legislative period of the Congress ends or begins on January 3rd.
In 1938 Joseph Gray was not re-elected. Two years later, he applied unsuccessfully to return to Congress. Between 1939 and 1943 he was a member of the Spangler city council. Otherwise he practiced as a lawyer again; he also edited the weekly newspaper The Conservative . He died on May 8, 1966 in Spangler, where he was also buried.
