Joseph B. McDevitt

Joseph Bryant McDevitt (born December 22, 1918 in McGehee, Arkansas , † February 26, 2006 ) was an American Rear Admiral in the US Navy , who was Judge Advocate General of the Navy between 1968 and 1972 . .

Life

McDevitt completed an undergraduate degree at the University of Illinois , from which he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts (BA). A postgraduate studies of law at the University of Illinois, he finished with a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.). He was also a graduate of the Newport School of Naval Warfare at Naval War College in 1958 .

McDevitt held various legal positions in the Judge Advocate General's Corps in the US Navy, including serving on the Joint Chiefs of Staff ( JCS ) and director of the International Law Department in the Judge Advocate General's Corps office. He later served as chief legal advisor to the Commander in Chief of the US Pacific Fleet .

On January 4, 1968 McDevitt was promoted to Rear Admiral and since April 1, 1968 successor to Rear Admiral Wilfred Asquith Hearn as Judge Advocate General of the Navy and thus the highest lawyer in the US Navy. He held this position for four years until March 31, 1972 and was then replaced by Rear Admiral Merlin Howard Staring .
