Joseph Davilmar Théodore
Joseph Davilmar Théodore (* 1847 in Ouanaminthe , † 1917 in Port-au-Prince ) was a Haitian politician and President of Haiti .
Life
After finishing school he joined the army, where he rose to major . He later worked as a teacher and as a diplomat.
He began his political career as a senator . As a nationalist , he rejected any kind of US occupation and underlined this stance by fighting against the government army in Ouanaminthe as the leader of the rebellious small farmers ( Cacos ) and moving his troops towards the capital Port-au-Prince .
On November 6, 1914, he succeeded Oreste Zamor as President of Haiti . Because of his anti-American stance, he was overthrown by a US-backed coup under the command of Jean Vilbrun Guillaume Sam on February 21, 1915. It was his undoing that he could not pay the wages of the insurgent peasants as promised and that they turned against him.
After his fall, he went into exile in Curaçao for a while . However, he returned to Haiti under the US protectorate , where he died in Port-au-Prince in 1917. However, he was not given a state funeral .
