Joseph Duffy

Joseph Duffy (born February 3, 1934 in Dublin , Ireland ) is emeritus Roman Catholic Bishop of Clogher in Ireland.

Life

Joseph Duffy, the eldest of four children of Edward Duffy and Brigid MacEntee, attended St. Louis' Infant School in Clones , County Monaghan and St. Macartan's College in Monaghan . He studied Catholic theology and philosophy at St. Patrick's College in Maynooth and was ordained a priest on June 22, 1958. He then studied at the National University of Ireland , where he received his master's degree in 1960 with a thesis on the dialect of South Tipperary. After graduation, Duffy taught Irish and French at St. Macartan's College for twelve years . From 1972 to 1979 Duffy was a curator in Enniskillen Parish , County Fermanagh .

On July 7, 1979, at the age of 45, Duffy was appointed Bishop of the Diocese of Clogher by Pope John Paul II . He was ordained bishop by the Archbishop of Armagh, Cardinal Tomás Ó Fiaich .

During the 1980s Duffy was the chairman of the Liturgy Commission of the Irish Bishops' Conference . In the 1990s he was the Speaker of the Irish Bishops' Conference for several years.

On May 6, 2010, Pope Benedict XVI. his age-related retirement.
