Joseph F. Keithley

Joseph Faber Keithley (born August 3, 1915 in Peoria , Illinois , † October 1, 1999 in Cleveland , Ohio ) was an American entrepreneur and founder of Keithley Instruments .

His parents were Giles E. and Elizabeth F. Keithley. He received his Bachelor's degree from MIT in 1937 and his Master of Science degree the following year . From 1938 to 1940 he was a technical assistant at Bell Telephone Laboratories in New York. In 1940 he became an engineer at the Naval Ordnance Lab in Washington, DC After inventing a launcher for underwater mines there, he received the US Navy's Distinguished Civilian Service Award in 1945 . After the Second World War he went to the Massa Labs near Cleveland.

In 1946 he founded Keithley Instruments in Cleveland. He rented a small workshop for $ 8.50 a month, where he produced a small signal amplifier, the Phantom Repeater . The electrometer he built next was what made the company so successful. The company later moved to Solon , Ohio.

He had three children with his wife, Nancy.

He has received a variety of awards.
