history
The first settlers came from Connecticut to what is now the borough of Solon, which was part of the Connecticut Western Reserve , around 1820 . The township was named after Lorenzo Solon Bull, son of Isaac Bull, one of the first settlers. The main reason for the naming of both was the memory of Solon , the famous Athens statesman in ancient Greece , who had curtailed the power of the nobility and strengthened democracy . The model of the democratic form of government of ancient Greece was alive for the USA in the years after the declaration of independence in 1776 and is reflected in many names of settlements in Ohio in the early 19th century. These include names such as Athens , East Sparta , Delphos or Aurora . In 1947, Swagelok was founded in Solon.
One of the difficulties the pioneers faced in this area of Ohio was draining the swamps. These swamps around Lake Erie were created by silting up the glacial lakes after the end of the Wisconsin Ice Age at the beginning of the Holocene . Overcoming these difficulties provided the settlers in Solon Township with fertile arable land that could be used for growing corn and wheat and for livestock farming. The area was known for its cheese production and by 1850 there were already 1,034 residents in Solon Township.
