Joseph Gehot (born April 7, 1756 in Brussels , † around 1820 in the USA ) was a Belgian violinist and classical composer .

Life

Joseph Gehot came to the court chapel of the Duke of Lorraine at the age of eleven and was trained there by Pieter van Maldere . He made trips to Germany, France and England. He published several chamber music collections in Paris and London . He has composed operas for several London theaters. He also published three textbooks during his time in London.

In 1792 he emigrated to the United States with other musicians. Here he advertised that he had played in the “Professional Concert” in London under the direction of Joseph Haydn and Ignaz Pleyel , but this has not been proven. In September 1792 his " Overture in Twelve Movements, Expressive of a Voyage from England to America " was performed in New York . From the end of 1792 he worked as a violinist for the Philadelphia Concert Society . Here he created other works that were regularly performed. He is also said to have composed two violin concertos during this time, which, like the aforementioned overture, have been lost.
