After his habilitation in 1965 at the Justus Liebig University in Gießen with the text “Metal derivatives of perfluoromethylphosphorus and arsenic compounds” , he received the venia legendi in the subject of inorganic chemistry and was senior assistant and private lecturer at the University of Karlsruhe (TH) .

In 1970 he received a reputation as a professor of inorganic chemistry at the Technical University of Darmstadt also Director of the Institute of Eduard Zintl Institute of THD. 1971/1972 and 1979/1980 he was Dean of the Faculty of Inorganic Chemistry and Nuclear Chemistry . In 1997 he retired and since then has been researching at the Institute for Inorganic and Analytical Chemistry at the University of Münster.

Grobe is a recognized fluorine chemist . His main areas of research were basic research in the field of complex chemistry of transition metals, especially metal carbonyl derivatives for the clarification of bonding issues. Furthermore, he dealt with problems of "building and monument protection with organosilicon compounds" and "investigations on highly reactive multiple compounds". In 1999 he presented a “construction kit for natural stone conservation”, funded by the German Federal Environment Foundation (DBU) . In 2003 he was for his scientific work on the chemistry and the development of scientific cooperation between Russian and German chemists fluorine, in particular working groups in Novosibirsk , with the honorary doctorate of NN Vorozhtsov Institute of Organic Chemistry of the Russian Academy of Sciences awarded.
