Joseph Heigel (* 1780 in Munich , † 1837 in Paris ) was a German miniature painter and lithographer .

Life

Joseph Heigel came from a family of actors. His father was the court actor Joseph Franz Heigel (1752–1811), and his brothers Caesar Max (1783–1847), Karl and Klemens August Heigel (1792–1849) also worked as actors.

In 1795 there was a possible first stay in Paris for training in the studio of the miniature painter Jean-Baptiste Isabey , before 1797 until 1806 he was trained at the Munich Art Academy . Heigel worked as a copier in the Munich Hofgarten Gallery (histories, portraits). Around 1806-1819 there was a second stay in Paris and possibly the continuation of the training in Isabey's studio. He received his first commissions as a miniature painter and copyist. In 1819 he returned to Munich, where he worked as a miniature painter at court. Between 1819 and 1828 Heigel alternated between Germany and Paris, in 1828 he traveled to Berlin , then via Frankfurt am Main and Darmstadt back to Paris, where he then settled and stayed there permanently.

His son Franz Napoleon Heigel (1813–1888) also worked as a painter.
