Franz Napoleon Heigel

Franz Napoleon Heigel (born May 15, 1813 in Paris , † June 22, 1888 in Munich ) was a German painter .

Life

Heigel was born in Paris as the son of the portrait painter Joseph Heigel (1780–1837). He was trained at the Art Academy in Munich and in several studios , from 1828 in Paris with Guérin , before he went on study trips to Italy (1839 and 1846), Belgium and France .

He then worked at the Bavarian court as a portrait and genre painter and created numerous watercolors and miniatures . He not only portrayed all members of the royal family, but also celebrities from science and art. By the end of the 1850s, Heigel had painted over 800 miniature portraits. Particularly noteworthy is the characteristic depiction of different nationalities in Heigel's genre and especially costume painting.

Heigel was awarded the Bavarian Medal for Art and Science and was an honorary member of the Belgian Society of Watercolor Artists . His works have been exhibited in the Kunsthalle Bremen and the Metropolitan Museum of Art .
