Joseph Hoffmann

Joseph Hoffmann (born October 16, 1810 in Mannheim ; † May 15, 1881 in Ludwigshafen am Rhein ) was a German builder and contractor who was also active in local politics and was mayor of Ludwigshafen am Rhein.

Life

He was the son of the bricklayer Franz Xaver Hoffmann (1776–1845) and his wife Margarethe geb. Kohlschmitt (1784-1826).

Joseph Hoffmann initially worked as a stone mason and bricklayer in Mannheim. After the purchase of the Rheinschanze opposite Mannheim (later Ludwigshafen am Rhein) by the Kingdom of Bavaria , he founded a construction business there in March 1843, which developed into the most important company of its kind in the Palatinate ( Joseph Hoffmann & Söhne , oHG from 1870 , from 1913 GmbH, from 1922 public limited company, dissolved in 1958). The buildings erected under his direction include the Luther Church and St. Ludwig in Ludwigshafen, the royal palace Villa Ludwigshöhe near Edenkoben and numerous public, private and industrial buildings in Ludwigshafen.

In 1850 he moved to Ludwigshafen. Hoffmann was chairman of the Palatinate Chamber of Commerce and Industry, took part in the founding of the wagon construction factory in Ludwigshafen in 1867 and is valid with the "Brief history of the Ludwigshafen trading center from its earliest memory to 1868" (Ludwigshafener Anzeiger 1868, No. 1 –18) as the first historian of the city of Ludwigshafen.

In 1834 he married Margaretha Grohé (born March 21, 1809 in Mannheim; † July 14, 1883 in Ludwigshafen), a daughter of the Mannheim citizen and gardener Johann Georg Grohé and his wife Juliane Sophie LeComte.

politics

In Ludwigshafen Hoffmann was a member of the local commission from 1850, of the local council from 1853 to 1858 and of the city council from 1863 to 1868. In 1868 he was elected mayor of the city. One of the measures taken during his tenure was the construction of the municipal gas works, which went into operation on November 4, 1871. In the new election in 1872, he no longer made himself available.
