Joseph Hornung (born January 25, 1792 in Geneva ; † February 4, 1870 ibid) was a Swiss genre and history painter as well as draftsman and lithographer .

life and work

Joseph Hornung came from a family of Alsatian origin who had lived in Geneva since 1685 . Born the son of Jean-Simon Hornung and Marie-Madeleine Romieux, he was trained as a watch case engraver . He learned painting as an autodidact with the help of Gabriel Constant Vaucher (1768–1814).

He made his debut in 1826 at the Musée Rath in Geneva and exhibited his works in 1839 at the Royal Academy of Arts in London and in the Paris salons in 1831, 1840, 1841, 1843 and 1847. He visited Italy in 1834, Holland in 1838, England in 1840 and 1859.

Many of his works were dedicated to the history of the Reformation . Some of his pictures served as templates for hand-made lithographs .

He was friends with the sculptor James Pradier , the painters François Diday and Alexandre Calame and the writer Marc Monnier .
