Joseph Kriechbaumer (born March 13, 1819 in Tegernsee ; † May 2, 1902 in Munich ) was a German entomologist .

Life

Joseph Kriechbaumer first attended primary school in his birthplace, then until 1838 the (today's) Wilhelmsgymnasium in Munich . He then studied philosophy in Munich , then medicine and natural history . He received his doctorate in medicine with an entomological doctoral thesis . However, he did not practice as a doctor. From 1844 to 1853 he worked in the Catholic canton school in Chur as a teacher of natural history. He married in 1847, but his wife died in 1849. From 1853 he taught in various schools in Munich. In 1858 he was entrusted with the management of the newly built trade school in Ingolstadt. He published several entomological papers. From January 1859 he was the curator of the zoological and zootomic collections (the current Zoological State Collection in Munich ). In addition to insects, he was initially also responsible for molluscs . But he soon became a well-known specialist in hymenoptera (Hymenoptera). In 1892 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina . In 1898 Kriechbaumer was appointed second curator of the ZSM, which today corresponds to a second director. From autumn 1901 he could no longer work due to illness and died on May 2, 1902 in Munich. He was buried in the city of his birth.

Scientific importance

Joseph Kriechbaumer was above all a well-known specialist in hymenoptera, he has published almost 300 individual scientific articles, mainly on parasitic wasps (Ichneumonidae), bees (Apiformes) and sawfly (Symphyta). He has re-described a number of species.

Kriechbaumer sorted, identified and cataloged many insects in the entomological collection of today's Zoological State Collection in Munich.
