He then traveled to Brisbane, Queensland and opened a doctor's office.

His scientific interest was in the flora of the Australian rainforest. He was particularly interested in the chemistry of plants and their importance as a medicine for the Aborigines . In this respect, he also dealt with their language and culture and described them as one of the first. His interest was not only exhausted in this area, he also described the Charon annuilpes, a previously unknown species of scorpion .

Lauterer was a member of the Royal Society of Queensland and became its president in 1896. In the Proceedings of the Royal Society of Queensland appeared numerous articles and contributions from him until 1899. In the last decade of his life he switched to travel writing, to which he brought his personal and professional experience from trips to Asia, Oceania and South America.

The botanical name of the Mischarytera lautereriana reminds of him as a botanist.
