Live and act

The son of the shoemaker Franz Joseph Müller and Elisabeth Mertens studied ancient languages and natural sciences at the University of Bonn after completing his Abitur at what was then the Prussian grammar school and later the Kaiser Karls grammar school in Aachen . After completing these subjects, Müller initially got a job as a trial candidate at his old school, was then officially taken on as a grammar school teacher in autumn 1831 and later promoted to senior teacher. In the meantime, he received his doctorate in 1839 at the University of Erlangen Dr. phil. At the Kaiser-Karls-Gymnasium, Müller taught Latin, Greek and French for the middle school as well as German, zoology, botany, mineralogy and physics for the upper school until his retirement in autumn 1868.

Müller's main inclination, also beyond the school service, was natural history research, especially in the field of fossilization . He examined primarily fossils in the area of the Aachen chalk and summarized his findings in his main work, the " Monograph of the Petrefacts of the Aachen Chalk Formation " in two volumes and a third supplement volume, which was published by the Natural History Association of the Rhineland and Westphalia in Bonn.

Another focus of his extensive work was the research and handling of the Aachen dialect . Together with his college friend Wilhelm Weitz, Müller wrote the book “ Die Aachener Mundart - Idiotikon plus a poetic appendix ” in 1836 and Müller also published numerous satirical humorous essays in the Aachen dialect and many occasional poems as well as a treatise on Aachen sagas and legends.

In addition to his fields of activity, Müller volunteered in several public offices. Among other things, he was one of the co-founders of the Aachener Karlsverein for the restoration of Aachen Cathedral , of which he was a member of the board until his death, as well as a member of the municipal council and long-time secretary of the Marianneninstitut , a maternity hospital for poor women who have recently given birth. He was also a member of Club Aachener Casino since 1842 .

For his many services, Joseph Müller was awarded the Red Eagle Order of Class IV in 1853 and, on the occasion of his retirement in 1868, the Prussian Order of the Crown of Class IV.

Joseph Müller was married to Caroline Michaelis (1802–1872), with whom he had a son and a daughter. The Müller family found their final resting place in Aachen's Ostfriedhof .
