Joseph Natterer (born October 7, 1786 in Laxenburg near Vienna, † June 28, 1852 in Vienna ) was an Austrian ornithologist .

Like his brother Johann Natterer , he had a passion for collecting and hunting from his father Joseph Natterer senior , whose private collection was acquired by Emperor Franz II in 1793 and served as the basis for the Vienna Natural History Cabinet , where he was curator from 1810.

There he worked in an influential position. He was an experienced, well-known ornithologist and was in contact with all the great experts of the time. After his brothers returned from Brazil in 1836, he appointed Johann as curator-adjunct in the natural history cabinet. He was buried in the Sankt Marxer Friedhof .

He was the father of Josef Franz Natterer (1819–1862) and Johann August Natterer (1821–1900).
